The primary objective of this course is to explore the ways that race is constructed in U.S. media and political rhetoric. Students will gain a fuller understanding of the ways race is constructed, projected and reified through media. We interrogate how racial stereotypes and hierarchies are maintained and challenged rhteorically in various media texts. Major units of study include: (1) What are we Talking about when we Talk about Race?: Selected Readings in Racial Construction; (2) From the Beginning: African Americans, Native Americans, Latinos, Jewish Americans, Asian Americans, and Multiracial Americans as “Others”; and (3) Where are we Now?: Challenging Stereotypes and the Rise of Anti-Arab Images.
